Downtown has experienced several major changes throughout the life of the City, and each era has helped to shape the form, character and quality of this beloved community space. This chapter explores the Downtown’s past, and makes the case for preserving critical resources as a way to maintain a connection to Santa Monica’s rich heritage of buildings, open spaces and cultural experiences. It also highlights the need to sharpen our tools for the preservation and maintenance of historic resources through new review processes and funding mechanisms.
Advocates of Historic Preservation as well as property owners who own historic resources will want to review the existing toolkit that is described in this chapter, and familiarize themselves with the policies that guide site improvements.
Property owners adjacent to historic resources may also find direction within this chapter for how to design projects in a way that is sensitive to the scale, views, and context of an historic neighbor
